The pop princess – who has sold 68 million records worldwide and is about to embark on a 33-date tour – will be joined by Glasgow-born singer Lulu, Scots band Deacon Blue and one of Scotland’s most famous songwriters, Dougie MacLean.

Hampden Park will be transformed from a sports arena into a riot of celebration and song, with 2,000 volunteer performers. The ceremony will feature 160 tonnes of staging, more than 3,000 props and 454 flags.

Lulu, who entertained crowds at Glasgow Green before the opening ceremony, will be joined on the Hampden bill by Glasgow synthpop band Prides.

David Zolkwer, head of ceremonies and artistic director, said: “It’s been an absolutely amazing time but now we’ve reached the bittersweet moment when we brace ourselves for the inevitable goodbyes and the farewells.

“So, after an incredible feast of sport and culture, we’re delighted to invite everyone ‘back to ours’ to party big time, in Glasgow style.”

Sunday’s ceremony will be broadcast live on the BBC One and to an estimated television audience of one billion across 71 Commonwealth nations and territories.
