Keith Jack review: Dreams really can come true for reality show's local hero

Keith Jack *** Royal LyceumNORMALLY the Lyceum plays host to excellent and challenging theatre plays. Last night, though, an altogether different type of show was on offer.

The theatre acted as the venue for the Edinburgh leg of an album-launch tour by Any Dream Will Do runner-up, Keith Jack. One treat the performers are unlikely to enjoy anywhere else on their tour was the magnificent and imposing wooden stage set installed for the theatre's run of Macbeth. Central to the scenery was a huge circular wooden podium, slanted at a precarious angle: fine for emoting and speech-making, but perhaps slightly awkward for dance routines rehearsed on a level floor.

To their credit, not only did the performers deal with it perfectly well, Jack and his pianist, Greg Friel, played around with it and got a laugh out of it. In fact, one of the many good things that can be said about the 20-year-old singer is that he has a very vocal sense of humour and bags of personality.

With two acts to support him, the audience got more than their money's worth from the show. Glasgow-born 18-year-old Francesca Kimberley has a soaring voice and classical training and, after a bit longer treading the boards, should be an entertainer well worth watching out for.

Karla Bernardi, 22, from Inverness, showed all the star quality that Simon Cowell missed on X Factor. Her brief but potent set showed that, with a little more experience and confidence, she should easily find her feet. With her rich, powerful and soulful voice, she should be attracting comparisons with major league singers very soon.

It was Keith Jack that the sell-out crowd were waiting for, though. With his friendly and chatty manner and boyish good looks, the Dalkeith lad seemed to appeal to the widest possible audience. Fans of all ages lapped it all up, and he delivered with style.

Jack powered through song after song, often dancing – to the audience's delight – with dancers Alana and Laura, but always throwing that trademark grin all over the place. Of course, part of his obvious joy could be the fact that he was performing to a very supportive home crowd, none of whom, it seemed, could get enough of him.
