Hidden gem: The Mercat Bar & Restaurant

TO REGULARS, it will come as no surprise that The Mercat has just been voted Scotland's best gastro pub.

But to those who may have passed it by in the hustle and bustle – and seemingly never-ending roadworks – of West Maitland Street, there is a drinking and dining experience waiting to be explored.

Opened in 2005 by owner Graham Blaikie, The Mercat is more than a stop-off for weary travellers making their way to and from Haymarket station.

With head chef Claire Allan at the helm, a strong customer base is growing around the food on offer. Claire used to work at the Vinters Rooms, in Leith, before she joined The Mercat and has just launched an impressive new menu, including steak and Caledonian pie (8.95); honey glazed duck (9.95); and prawn kebabs (5.25).

Management say its focus is on freshly prepared food, using quality local produce, but customers will also enjoy good service and value for money prices, all in a relaxed, modern and cosy setting.
