Glasgow’s Renfield Street Odeon demolished

It once played host to megastar acts such as the The Beatles and The Who but the final curtain has now come down on Glasgow’s Renfield Street Odeon.

Demolition experts moved in on Sunday to begin dismantling the the iconic cinema with the red brick back end of the building carefully dismanted piece by piece.

The art deco front facade will remain and will form the centre piece of a new £60m ten-floor office development.

The cinema closed its doors in 2006 with competition from the nearby nearby UGC complex and out-of-town complexes blamed for its demise.

Built in 1934 as the Paramount music venue it attracted some of the biggest names in the music business including Cliff Richard, Dusty Springfield and Roy Orbison along with the Rolling Stones.

It was converted into a 2800-seater cinema in the late 1960s.
