Glasgow galleries hit by strike action

GLASGOW'S museums and art galleries were again hit by strike action today as workers walked out over proposed changes to their pay and conditions.

The Burrell Collection and Kelvingrove Art Gallery (pictured) and Museum in Glasgow were among those affected by the industrial action which centres on Culture and Sport Glasgow's bid to freeze pay and cut overtime payments.

About 1,600 members of the Unison, Unite, GMB and Bectu unions are involved in the industrial action taken in connection with the organisation's bid to freeze pay and cut overtime payments.

Today's strike follows a walkout by union members last week.

Disruption to venues being used as polling stations has been kept to a minimum after Glasgow City Council last night won a legal ruling banning picket lines from polling stations between 7am and 11pm.

Brian Smith, Unison's Glasgow branch secretary, said the strike was going well.

He said: "The strike was never intended to interfere with the election and only 13 buildings are being used as polling stations. We were never going to try and stop people from voting."

Mr Smith said the union would meet again on Wednesday to decide whether to take further action.

Culture and Sport Glasgow is a charity which runs sport and leisure services for the city.

A spokesman said the organisation would try to minimise disruption caused by the action. The public are advised to check the organisation's website for any closures.
