Gig review: Andrea Corr

Andrea CorrOran Mor, Glasgow ***

Multimillion-selling Celt-pop siblings The Corrs have taken varied directions since going on hiatus in 2006, have. Caroline and Sharon have stepped back from the music business to raise families, and Jim is a noted New World Order conspiracy theorist.

Youngest sister Andrea has been the only Corr to seriously pursue a solo career. Her 2007 debut album Ten Feet High – which ditched the tin whistle in favour of sultry electro-pop – was largely ignored, but this gig showcased her recent second set Lifelines, which takes the safer line of high-end wedding band covers of her favourite tunes.

Supermodel-thin and wearing an elegant backless dress, Corr looked every bit the pop star still, an impression reinforced by six backing musicians that could have been jetted in from LA. A U2-soaring version of The Velvet Underground's Pale Blue Eyes ignored all of the original's understated cool. Corr seemed much more at home plaintively cabaret crooning Blue Bayou, though a sparse take on Daniel Johnston's Some Things Last a Long Time did prove she can leave her comfort zone, likewise a passable anthemic stab at The Blue Nile's Tinseltown in the Rain, which came with an official stamp of approval: "I got a lovely letter from Paul Buchanan that said that he liked my version," Corr said, "I've kept it in my back pocket all day."

Songs by "the family band" received the heartiest cheers of the night – Runaway and Dreams mid-set and Breathless at the close – suggesting appetite for a Corrs reunion might require sating soon.
