Games: Star Trek Online

Are you ready to boldly go where no role-playing game has gone before?

Cryptic Studios knows how to make a fun MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing game), such as last year's superhero title Champions Online. Set 30 years after the events of Star Trek: Nemesis, this latest offering is as big and ambitious as they come, delivering both space and on-foot combat. You must rise up through the ranks of Starfleet and help save the universe from an all-out war by completing orders issued by your superiors.

There are many galaxies to explore, each with a vast number of missions such as destroying a set number of enemy craft or escorting lost mining vessels. Space combat is incredibly tactical, with great emphasis on movement and shield preservation. However, ground combat is weighed down by sluggish controls, ropey graphics and an uninspiring battle system.

Star Trek Online's problem is that it tries to do too much. As a space RPG (role playing game), it is quite enjoyable, although it fails to match EvE Online. However, if you are a Trekkie there is enough series lore and subtle references to warrant a purchase. This is definitely one for the fans.
