Scottish Government chiefs wanted feedback to help shape a five-year plan promoting the language, but they received responses from just two named individuals, two people who withheld their details and five public bodies.

The extensive consultation process, which ran between April and June this year, was designed to demonstrate interest in sustaining the language’s future.

However, Tory MSP Alex Johnstone said the level of response “shows the SNP government is out of touch when setting its priorities”.

He said: “This paves the way for yet more’ money to be spent in an attempt to elevate just one of Scotland’s many cultural traditions.”
