FILM: A WAR

A War follows the life of a Danish soldier – played by Game of Thrones actor Pilou Asbaek – who makes a split-second decision whilst on tour whether to save the life of one of his men or a group of local civilians. His decision sees him face trial for unlawful killing when he returns to his homeland.

Made by Tobias Lindholm, co-writer of the political TV series Borgen and acclaimed Danish film A Hi-Jacking, A War moves from conflict zone to courtroom between the commander and his wife whose lives have been turned upside down by a judgement call made in haste.

A War is Denmark’s entry for this year foreign language film Oscar. The film’s documentary style approach, aided by Afghan war veterans playing soldiers, makes for realistic, breathtaking and tense viewing.

EXHIBITION: A CENTURY OF STYLE: COSTUME AND COLOUR 1800-1899

Bringing together Glasgow Museum’s collection of European costume, this exhibition showcases some rarely seen examples of womenswear, menswear and children’s clothing. The event also looks at how such garments were made and sold, and reveals the stories of some of the people who wore them. Through looking back at a century of style, the exhibition charts the social and economic trends that dictated the fashions of various periods. It also reflects the city’s important role as a leading textile manufacturer and Glasgow’s dominance as a major retail centre.

Leading Glaswegian department stores and dressmakers are represented in the exhibition alongside a beaded couture dress from Paris, a range of accessories, jewellery and bonnets.
