Film reviews: Exhibition | Heli | Postman Pat

Exhibition (15) ****A childless couple of artists (Viv Albertine of The Slits and Turner Prize-nominated Liam Gillick) barely live together in their striking, modernist house. Now they are about to sell up, and the film tracks the tensions and remoteness of their last few days. More bourgeois angst from Joanna Hogg in an abstract form that should enthral fans, but may exasperate casual viewers.Selected release: Cameo, Edinburgh, Tuesday

The Punk Singer (15)

****

Admired by Kurt Cobain and punched by Courtney Love, feminist rocker Kathleen Hanna seemed an unstoppable force in the 1990s leading Bikini Kill, then Le Tigre – until she abruptly announced her retirement. Sini Anderson shapes a fascinating, affectionate profile with Hanna’s husband and former Beastie Boy Adam Horovitz, singer Joan Jett and music writer Kim Gordon in the queue to pay tribute to the riotous grrrl.

An Episode In The Life Of An Iron Picker (12A)

****

Bleak, immersive story of a Roma family struggling to survive by salvaging metal. Based on actual events, Danis Tanovic approached the family involved to re-enact their ill-treatment by the authorities; a bold step, but it pays off.

Selected release: Glasgow Film Theatre, Tuesday and Wednesday

Heli (18)

***

Amat Escalante’s brutal account of a Mexican family who attract the wrath of a drugs cartel. Very little of the gruesome violence is left to your imagination.

Selected release: Glasgow Fim Theatre from Friday; Dundee Contemporary Arts from 30 May; Edinburgh Filmhouse from 6 June

Postman Pat The Movie (U)

***

Greendale’s mild-mannered postal worker (voiced by Stephen Mangan) enters a talent competition run by Simon Cowbell; fame and evil robot doppelgangers follow. Mild entertainment purely for children, apart from Pat’s bedtime reading of The Postman Always Rings Twice.

On general release from Friday
