David Tennant set for honorary degree in Glasgow ceremony

The Scottish actor, an RCS graduate, is being recognised for a near three-decade career in film, theatre and television. He will be awarded an Honorory Doctor of Drama.

The former Dr Who star will attend the ceremony on July 5 alongside choregrapher Sir Matthew Bourne and cellist Ralph Kirshbaum, who are also receiving honorary degrees for dance and music, respectively.

Tennant studied drama at the conservatoire from 1988 to 1991, when it was known as the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama, before going on to roles on stage and screen including performing with the Royal Shakespeare Company and starring in the Bafta award-winning Broadchurch TV series.

Tennant has most recently starred in the hit Netflix TV show Jessica Jones alongside Krysten Ritter, and is currently playing the lead in Shakespeare’s Richard II, directed by Gregory Doran.

Conservatoire principal Professor Jeffrey Sharkey said: “I am delighted that the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland is to confer honorary degrees on these truly world-class and inspirational individuals.

“They represent the highest levels of artistry in their chosen disciplines and help promote international reach of the performing arts.

“It is fitting that such respected artists join the RCS family in the year that we are named in the world’s top ten for performing arts education.

“We want to celebrate the exceptional achievements of David, Sir Matthew and Ralph, and the profound impact they have on individuals and audiences around the world.”
