Linguistics expert Susie Dent was embarrassed to admit to host Nick Hewer she was able to beat the previous five-letter offering of ‘bulge’.

It would have scored seven points on Monday’s show.

It was discovered by Dent who was accompanied on Dictionary Corner by Janet Street-Porter, who refused to spell out the word to Hewer and said: “I can’t say it.”

“Ok, lets get it over quickly.,” Dent said. “Bumhole is there.”

Hewer raised an eyebrow and said: “Bumhole? It’s going to be one of those days is it?”

Summing up the surprise many Twitter users felt, Callum Chetwynd said: “Why has the word ‘bumhole’ just been used on Countdown. And who knew it was one word!”
