Festive magic

THE annual children's trip to Lapland is one of the major events of the year for FACE - Fight Against Cancer in Edinburgh - which is based at the Western General Hospital.

For the past 16 years, charity workers have taken around 20 children, many of them terminally ill, to enjoy the magic of Christmas in Finnish Lapland.

The trip is organised by John Macaulay, a former police officer from Currie, who often faces a nail-biting run-up to each Christmas to ensure children are healthy enough to travel and have all the necessary documents they need.

"The kids are amazing," he says. "They go through so much, it's lovely to see them enjoying the experience of being in Lapland and meeting Santa.

"It's what Christmas should be all about."
