DVD review: The Sweeney, Entertainment One

What is it? A 21st-century update of Thames TV’s 1970s cop show, with Ray Winstone as detective Jack Regan (played by John Thaw in the original), Ben Drew (aka musician Plan B) taking over from Dennis Waterman as his sidekick Carter and Homeland’s Damian Lewis as Regan’s long-suffering boss DCI Frank Haskins.

What we said: “Apart from working in one of the best-loved lines – ‘Get your trousers on, you’re nicked’ – this is not really The Sweeney, more a re-badged generic policier. Winstone is very good at playing too old for this stuff. However, Ben Drew is no-one’s idea of Carter unless you’ve had a weird cheese dream about rappers on Slim-Fast.”
