THE seminal TV series The Avengers was at the height of its popularity when Patrick Macnee starred as John Steed and Honor Blackman as Dr Cathy Gale. The Gale era also saw Steed transformed from a trenchcoat wearing run of the mill agent into a stereotypical English gentleman in Savile Row suit, bowler hat and with umbrella, though his attire concealed all manner of tricks and gadgets. Nominated for five Oscars this outstanding costume drama stars Vanessa Redgrave in the title role and Glenda Jackson as Queen Elizabeth I, along with a stellar cast, including Ian Holm, Trevor Howard, Patrick McGoohan and Timothy Dalton. It also boasts a score by John Barry.
