DJ culture: Craig Jamieson – Modern Lovers, THE GRV

What's filling your floors this month?

Ken Boothe's I Don't Want To See You Cry. Up tempo 60s rock steady on the legendary Island label. Subtle layers of meaning with a big hunk of Curtis Mayfield-inspired soul thrown in.

Who was/is your DJ guru/inspiration?

No DJ guru – they are only good as the other people's music they play. Do admire very old skool DJs like Guy Stevens and Roger Eagle, who initially championed the (then commercially unviable) retro-soul we love so much at Modern Lovers.

What was your most banging Edinburgh gig?

Hide Ad

Kaiser Chiefs always ask me to do their Scottish dates, so the last Corn Exchange gig with them was rockin'.

What was the first track you ever bought?

The Bitterest Pill by The Jam, from a tiny record shop in Gourock, when I was tiny too.

Favourite all time track?

Billy Butler: The Right Track. No matter how lost, it always make you feel as if you've got somewhere to go.

Modern Lovers, The GRV, tonight, 11pm-3am, Guthrie Street, 0131-220 2987
