Photography: A Victorian Sensation

Photography: A Victorian Sensation is an exhibition that you should not miss. It tells the story of photography from its earliest beginnings through its evolution into a worldwide craze, and all that was still in the 19th century, long before the digital camera and smartphone. Countless images and fascinating early equipment all add to the richness of the story.

The Devil’s Larder

Ten years ago, it was one of the most successful Scottish-made shows ever on the Edinburgh Fringe, and now Grid Iron, the Edinburgh-based pioneers of site-specific theatre, revive their strange, sensual promenade work The Devil’s Larder for a brief tour that takes them from the old Leith Custom House to Selkirk, Oban and Melvich.

Based on the 64-part “cumulative novel” by Jim Crace, the show explores the powerful emotional subtext of food, from love and lust to jealousy, rage and revenge; Ben Harrison adapts and directs, and David Paul Jones and Mary Macmaster provide the show’s rich and haunting live music.

Back to the Future 2

“The future is here” reads the tagline of this reissue of Back to the Future 2.The reason is quite simple – the second movie in the time-travelling saga found 1985’s Marty McFly (Michael J Fox) visiting 21 October, 2015 – a world of hover-boards, self-lacing Nikes, and holographic sequels to Jaws.

If the future didn’t quite pan out like that, Wednesday’s nationwide re-release offers an intriguing opportunity to revisit the film on the actual day it’s set to see how wide of the mark Robert Zemeckis and co really were.

RSNO: Dejan Lazic

When Dejan Lazić last appeared with conductor Thomas Søndergård and the RSNO two years ago, he whipped up a storm, and the idiosyncratic Croatian pianist is back this week performing Chopin’s Piano Concerto No 2. The concert opens with his own enigmatically titled Overture from Piano Concerto in Istrian Style, and ends with Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
