Chris Hoy leads Jaguar team at Mille Miglia race

SCOTTISH Olympic cycling hero Chris Hoy is best known for his sprinting speed, but he had to show his stamina at the wheel as part of the Jaguar team at the Mille Miglia endurance race.

Hoy’s team at the 1,000-mile classic car event event included three-time Oscar-winning actor Daniel Day-Lewis, former Le Mans 24 Hour race winner Andy Wallace, and male supermodel David Gandy.

Drivers begin the race in Brescia in Northern Italy, heading to and from the capital Rome over the course of three days. Hoy and Wallace completed the race in a Jaguar XK120 from 1951, a vintage sports car worth hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Hoy said of the race: “Being asked to drive with Le Mans winner Andy Wallace in the Mille Miglia was a privilege and I was delighted to take part.

“It is a technical event that participants take very seriously – I enjoyed its deeply competitive nature and I’m delighted to have made my debut with Jaguar.”

Hoy and Wallace finishing a respectable 137th out of 407 finishers, and first among their Jaguar teammates.
