Charles Rennie Mackintosh dream home goes on sale

A PROPERTY that was designed by renowned architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh but was not built for 90 years has been put up for sale.

The architect drew up plans for the six-bedroom Artist’s Cottage and Studio next door in 1901 and planned to live there with his painter wife.

However, due to a lack of funds, the ambitious project was not completed before his death at the age of 60.

In the early 1990s, a developer saw the 90-year-old plans in the archives of the Hunterian Museum and Art Gallery in Glasgow and work finally began.

Both the main house and the two-bedroom studio were built to the original designs and have been furnished in Mackintosh style with period furniture and decor.

The two rural properties in Farr, near Inverness, are privately owned by a Dutch couple, who have now put them up for sale for £650,000 and £215,000 respectively.

Estate agent Kevin Maley said, thanks to Mackintosh’s designs, the cube-like properties still look fashionable today.

He said: “This is an exceptionally rare opportunity to buy a Mackintosh-designed home.

“Very few of his properties are in private ownership – most are public buildings and museums.”
