Prince Philip: Irvine Welsh recounts first and only time he met the Duke of Edinburgh as he dies aged 99

The famous Scottish author of Trainspotting looks back on the brief and only encounter he had with Prince Philip as the 99-year-old’s death is announced.

Mr Welsh – who hit fame in the 90s with his iconic cult classic novel Trainspotting – said he only met the Duke once when he was presenting the Duke of Edinburgh Award.

When the Duke noted that his novel set in Edinburgh was ‘jolly good’, Welsh responded with ‘perhaps a too drawn out “MmmmHmmmm”.

The Scottish author then noted that he was impressed by how the royal managed not to look ‘completely bored ****less.’

Taking to Twitter, Welsh wrote: “Only met him once when I presented a Duke of Edinburgh award.

"He came up to me and said: “Trainspotting. Jolly good.”

"I responded with perhaps a too drawn out “MmmmHmmmm...” before he moved on.

"I was impressed by the way he managed to look not completely bored ****less.”
