Book review: The Bishop's Man

The Bishop's Man by Linden MacIntyre is published by Jonathan Cape, priced £12.99

Scandals have rocked the Catholic Church the world over in recent years, with the US taking its fair share of the flak.

You might think Linden MacIntyre has taken on an easy target. But this story of the far-reaching consequences of priests who give in to temptation is neither solely about sex nor restricted to the clergy.

It deals with what can happen when men of God deny themselves and turn to alcohol rather than people.

MacIntyre's switchback style, taking the reader from Canada to Honduras and skipping from one decade to the next, might irk some. But it delivers a powerful message about human nature. We all need something to get us through.
