Beauty: Mac make-up lesson

What is it? A make-up lesson with Mac cosmetics.

How does it work?

Mac is a regular at the big designer catwalk shows; Diane Von Furstenburg, Herve Leger, Mulberry and Tommy Hilfiger have all used the brand backstage to work magic on the models. Don't worry if it's not the latest catwalk look that you're after when you head along to the counter at Harvey Nichols, as the trained make-up artists will happily do your look any way you want and will show you how to achieve the same results.

I decided to go for the ever-popular smoky-eyed look. After a few questions – on skin type, the look I wanted etc – Rosie selected products from Mac's large but ever-expanding make-up range in order to achieve the desired effect. This included various dark and sultry eye shadow shades and a set of splendid false eyelashes.

Not only do you get a step-by-step commentary as the make-up artist works, she also explains the different techniques used. It's often said that good make-up application relies on good brushes so it's great to learn more on a one-to-one basis. You can also keep a close eye on how things are progressing, thanks to a hand-held mirror.

Strip off or cover up?

The only thing you need to remove is your coat.

Does it work?

I don't wear much make-up and have often fancied a lesson. Not only did I learn plenty of helpful tips but I loved the final result. I was even able to do a decent job of recreating it a few days later.

Who is it for?

Whether you're going on a big night out or you just want to learn some tips from the professionals, this make-up lesson will give you a good grounding in application techniques.

How much is it?

It's 25 for 40 minutes to an hour, which is redeemable against Mac products. The lessons are popular, though, so remember to book in advance to avoid disappointment.
