Beauty: a peaceful mind is a good way to hold back years

Today we meet Jilly Kinsella, director of beauty therapy at Chamomile Sanctuary on Alva Street, winner of the Beauty Salon of the Year at the Scottish Health and Beauty Awards 2011.

What was your journey into beauty?

That's an easy one. I'd always had a strong interest in health and fitness so decided early on I'd like a career in the beauty industry. When I left school at 16, I got a place at Champneys Beauty College in Hertfordshire. Guests enjoyed body and beauty treatments during residential stays, along with a selected menu to help with weight issues, too. They all left feeling fabulous.

I trained in beauty therapy and achieved the Confederation of Beauty Therapy and CIDESCO (top inter -nationally recognised certificate in beauty therapy). Having enjoyed my introduction to beauty therapy, I got my first job at the high-profile Ragdale Hall in Leicestershire.

Two years later, I got a senior therapist position at Springs Health Hydro (now known as Champneys Spring).

I then moved back up north and worked at Stobo Castle Health Spa, before moving to Edinburgh to open my own business, Jilly's Beauty Clinic on Randolph Place, in October 1996.

What's in your bathroom cabinet?

I'm a great advert for the products we use with our clients, particularly the Sundari range.

Is there a product you cannot live without?

It's got to be Sundari Chamomile Eye Oil as it is fantastic for dark circles and helps with hydration and fine lines.

What is your favourite scent?

Agent Provocateur. I discovered it some time ago when a client came into the salon wearing it.

What are your three favourite beauty products?

Sundari Chamomile Eye Oil, Sundari Comfrey Cleanser and Sundari Neem and Tamanu moisturiser. It's important to start a good skin care routine from a young age. These products are perfect for me.

Do you have a style icon?

Audrey Hepburn or Coco Chanel. They are both classically elegant.

Do you have a beauty treatment you swear by?

The Guinot Hydradermie facial. This is a real "must have" in any serious beauty routine and has long-lasting results.

Have you had any beauty disasters?

Luckily, nothing springs to mind!

What's your advice for staying youthful?

I don't think there's any better option than good quality products and a peaceful mind. However, the products don't jump off the shelves themselves - it requires commitment to your regime.

What's next for you?

Having achieved the much coveted Beauty Salon of the Year at the Scottish Health and Beauty Awards 2011 - and a finalist place at the Professional Beauty Awards within a year of opening our doors - the next challenge is to build on this while continuing to offer our clients the unique luxury experience they've come to expect.
