Anne's still going strong at the ripe old age of 102

Lifelong Leither Anne Jinks has celebrated her 102nd birthday and is still going strong.

Anne Jinks, ne Carnie, was born on January 21, 1909 in Leith, the only girl to a family with six boys.

She left Bonnington Road School at the age of 14 to help out with her family, but soon went to work in the old Cummings box factory in Bonnington Road.

After working there for almost a decade, she married her husband Joseph Jinks, now deceased, at St Thomas' Church in Leith.

Joseph was a gunner in the Royal Artillery, before leaving the army to pursue a career in construction.

Soon afterwards the couple started a family, having three children, a son named Joseph and two daughters, Anne and Betsy.

Reminiscing about family holidays caravanning every year in a Abelour, Betsy, now 72, said: "We used to have a great time, when it was dry of course."

Having a large family meant that every Hogmanay they would all congregate at Anne's mother's home to sing and be merry.

A love of music has been a running theme throughout Anne's life as she regularly attended the theatre and cinema with her children and had a special fondness for musicals.

Betsy said that she was always a loving, caring mum who was "always there and very reliable" when they were children.

She added that her mum was an "ordinary woman who loved going to the bingo" in her younger days.

Anne now lives in the Bonnington Care Centre, where she still enjoys listening to music, thinking about days been and gone.

Chonna Togato, one of the care assistants at the centre, said that she always wants them to "sing her songs to her" and while she can no longer sing along, she will hum to the tunes as they sing.

Her favourites include Bing Crosby and Dean Martin.

The family went into the centre to mark the milestone last weekend. Staff put banners up to mark the special occasion as she is the oldest in her unit.

The party for "our Anne", as she is known at the centre, was a low-key affair with sandwiches, cakes and bubbly.

Her daughter Anne, who now lives in Italy, flew over to join in with the festivities, which her mum enjoyed.

Betsy visits her most days of the week for a chat, as a reliable daughter for a reliable mother.

A lady from a humble background, she has lived through the world wars and has seen the city she has spent her life change so much.
