Album review: Primal Scream: More Light

BOBBY Gillespie has always talked a good game. Here, in cahoots with producer David Holmes, he throws every record he’s ever loved at the wall.

Primal Scream: More Light

First International, £13.99

***

More Light is nevertheless subtly wrought and succeeds in taking the Scream through some new sonic scenery with the snake-hipped Bowiesque sax and synths of opener 2013, woozy garage fever rush of Hit Void, the psych noir number Tenement Kid, stealthy torch song Goodbye Johnny and the desert mantra River Of Pain with its abstract classical coda.

Guest vocalist Mark Stewart sounds genuinely deranged on Culturecide, Robert Plant haunts Elimination Blues rather than inhabiting it and Gillespie strings together a bunch of buzzwords to mutter his state of the nation address.
