9am Briefing: Royal Highland Show 'will stay put for at least 30 years'

ORGANISERS of the Royal Highland Show have said the event will stay on its existing site at Ingliston for at least another 30 years.

The news comes after Edinburgh airport dramatically scaled back its expansion plans

The agricultural show faced having to relocate elsewhere in west Edinburgh under a previous blueprint for the airport's expansion.

However, the Royal Highland Agricultural Society of Scotland (RHASS) - which runs the showground arena - has now been told that only a fraction of its land is likely to be needed over the 30 years.

• A FIRE broke out in a derelict factory in Dalkeith.

Part of the roof at the old Laidlaw & Fairgreave building, on Thornybank Industrial Estate, caught fire at around 1.30pm yesterday.

The cause of the small fire is unknown.

• A DRINK driver has been jailed for what a sheriff called "appalling and dangerous behaviour" on the road.

Douglas Dowling, 54, of Uphall, West Lothian, caused other drivers to brake violently and swerve out of his path to avoid colliding with him.

During a ten-mile journey from Polkemmet Country Park, Whitburn, to his home in Uphall, West Lothian, he drove into the path of oncoming traffic and repeatedly bounced off the kerb.

Dowling admitted driving dangerously on various roads in West Lothian on October 5 last year.

He was sentenced to 108 days in prison.
