IN the 84 years since the first Commonwealth Games took place, Scotland and its athletes have played a prominent role in the Games’ history and lore.

Arnold Black is one of the country’s foremost authorities on Scottish athletics, and is the co-author of a book that explores the history of the sport north of the border, as well as its relationship with the Commonwealth Games. He spoke to the Scotsman to reflect on Scotland’s long, and at times controversial, relationship with the tournament.
