St Patrick's Day may originate in Ireland, but the celebrations are now a global affair - celebrated in more countries than any other national festival.

From Brazil to New Zealand revellers will wear green and raise a glass to the Irish patron saint.

Here are five events happening on the big day - Sunday, March 17 - in Scotland.

Stiff Little Fingers (Glasgow)

Formed in Belfast in 1977, Stiff Little Fingers were at the forefront of the punk movement along with the likes of The Clash, The Jam and The Undertones. Their 'St Patrix' weekend gigs at the Glasgow Barrowlands are becoming something of a tradition, and they're back this year for two shows on March 16 and 17 supported by original Sex Pistols bass guitarist Glen Matlock.

Jedward (Glasgow)

Glasgow's Oran Mor are holding a St Patrick's party and the guests of honour are singing Irish X Factor twins Jedward. They've been back in the news after former manager Louis Walsh labelled them "vile" on Celebrity Big Brother and are sure to draw the crowds. There's also plenty of other live music and 'boozy bingo' to win a range of Guinness merch.

St Patrick's Festival (Edinburgh)

Billed as "Edinburgh's biggest and best St Patrick's Day celebration", the five levels of The Three Sisters on Edinburgh's Cowgate will be decked out in green this Friday. Running from 8am-3am there's plenty of time to enjoy yourself, with free breakfasts available before 12noon, plenty of live music, secret special guests, drag queens and 'craic'oke'.

St Patrick's Day Fun Fiddle Ceilidh (Edinburgh)

An afternoon of family entertainment featuring Porty's own Fun Fiddle Mega Band will be held at The Wash House, in Edinburgh's Portobello, from 3-5.15pm. There will be lots of music and dancing for all ages - along with a snack bar. All proceeds will be going to the Screen Porty Community Cinema.

The Stand St Patrick's Day Special (Glasgow)

Glasgow's legendary Stand Comedy Club is hosting a special night of standup to celebrate Ireland's patron saint. Hosted by Live at the Apollo star Keith Farnan, it will feature another four comedians from the Emerald Isle - Aidan Green, Aideen Mcqueen, Ruth Hunter and headliner (and former circus performer) Martin Mor.
