A roundup of the latest golf news

MCGLADREY CLASSIC: PGA Tour rookie Michael Thompson collected three birdies over his first six holes last night to give himself a three-shot lead in the final round of the McGladrey Classic at Sea Island in Georgia. The 26-year-old from Tucson birdied three straight holes from the fourth and was 16 under through seven.

Webb Simpson picked up shots at the first and fifth and was Thompson’s nearest challenger at 13 under after eight holes.

Ben Crane was a further stroke adrift in third, with two more Americans – Bryce Molder and Kevin Streelman – alongside South Africa’s former Open champion Louis Oosthuizen in a tie for fourth on 11 under. Trevor Immelman slipped down the leaderboard to joint seventh through eight holes.

ASIAN TOUR: Dubai-based Scot Ross Bain finished third behind Australian David Gleeson to finish third in the Hero Indian Open in Delhi. Bain, 35, turned in 33 but double bogeyed the 11th hole before covering his final six holes in four-under for a closing 67 and a 16-under-par total of 272, four behind Gleeson.

“I’ve been playing really good this year and got nothing out of it. It is satisfying to finish in tied third.

“I’ve worked hard and played pretty good,” said Bain, who is still searching for a maiden Asian Tour victory.

Gleeson, who missed five consecutive cuts earlier this year, showed no signs of losing his overnight lead as he closed with a 20-under-par 268 total at the Delhi Golf Club, the lowest winning score on the Indian Open.

EUROPEAN SENIORS TOUR: Carl Mason claimed his 25th European Senior Tour title at the Benahavis Senior Masters after the Englishman’s two-under-par final round of 69 earned him a three-shot victory at La Quinta Golf and Country Club in Benahavis, Spain.

It was Mason’s second win of the 2011 season as he continued his love affair with Spain, the country where he sealed his first European Tour win at the Open de España in 1994 and also broke Tommy Horton’s record of Senior Tour titles with his 24th at the OKI Open de España Senior by Cleveland Golf/Srixon last May.

The 58-year-old’s latest victory saw him leap into eighth spot in the Senior Tour Order of Merit.

Overnight leader Gary Wolstenholme, the six-time Walker Cup player, dropped three shots, including a double-bogey at the eighth, to slip back.
