Hibs midfielder Lewis Stevenson awaits scan on suspected broken toe

HIBS fear Lewis Stevenson could be sidelined for a lengthy period after the midfield star suffered a suspected broken toe in the first Edinburgh derby of the season.

It is understood the 24-year-old is awaiting the results of a scan on the injury to the big toe of his left foot, sustained during the first half of the clash against Hearts.

Stevenson was seen apparently signalling he had a problem to the bench shortly before the interval, but played his part in ensuring Pat Fenlon’s team, which had gone into the match as big underdogs following the humiliating 5-1 Scottish Cup 
final defeat to their greatest 
rivals in May, earned a well-merited point.

It was his glorious crossfield ball which allowed team-mate David Wotherspoon to supply a perfectly timed pass for Leigh Griffiths to elude the attempt of Gorgie skipper Marius Zaliukas to play him offside, the Scotland Under-21 hitman claiming his first derby goal as he slipped the ball under goalkeeper Jamie MacDonald to cancel out Andy Driver’s opener. Stevenson returned for the second half but lasted just five more minutes before being forced to quit, his place taken by Honduran internationalist Jorge Claros.

Fenlon will undoubtedly see the potential long-term loss of Kirkcaldy-born Stevenson as a blow to his early season plans, the Hibs boss having expressed his appreciation of the player’s attitude, desire and commitment on more than one occasion, describing him as exactly the sort he wants to see in his dressing-room.

Since Fenlon replaced Colin Calderwood in the Easter Road hotseat last autumn, Stevenson has established himself as a first-team regular, missing just three matches from then until the end of the season, two through suspension and the third as he was rested along with a string of others for the final SPL match against Inverness the week before the Scottish Cup final. In playing so regularly, Stevenson, who signed a one-year deal last summer, triggered a clause in that contract guaranteeing himself another year.

Meanwhile, Hibs have

revealed that tickets for their Scottish Communities League Cup second-round tie against Second Division Queen of the South, due to be played at Palmerston Park on Tuesday, August 28, will cost £15 for adults, £8 for OAPs and students, and £5 for children under 16.
