Sharks may be world first

Zoologists at Deep Sea World are celebrating after the birth of five critically endangered baby sharks – and believe more are on their way.

Over the weekend, four angel shark pups were born at the North Queensferry aquarium, joining a pup which arrived prematurely two weeks ago.

All five are now being looked after in a special nursery tank while the mum is being closely monitored in an isolation tank.

It is believed this may be the first time this species of shark has bred successfully in captivity anywhere in the world.

“It’s certainly a UK first and we think it may also be a world first,” said Deep Sea World’s dive officer, Tina Aydon.
