CSKA 1-2 Manchester City: Racist chants blight win

MANCHESTER City midfielder Yaya Toure confirmed he was the target of racist chanting as his side beat CSKA Moscow 2-1 in the Russian capital.

Chants could be heard from the home fans as City used two goals from Sergio Aguero to come from behind and take a vital win in Group D of the Champions League.

“It is quite disappointing when you’re talking about people continuing to do that,” Toure said. “It is unbelievable and very sad on my part. “I think UEFA need to do something strong. Every time we say something it continues, something has to be done to stop it.”

Asked what action he would like to see the European governing body take, Toure called for stronger punishment in place of the often small fines which have been handed out in the past.

“Uefa has to be stronger, and hold all the clubs and all the fans that do that [responsible]. Maybe they have a stadium ban.”

Aguero continued his rich vein of form with a quickfire double to settle the tricky encounter after former Manchester United player Zoran Tosic opened the scoring.

Despite coping well with the much-criticised Khimki Arena pitch, City squandered a number of chances to make the game safe and were left hanging on, with Joe Hart saving from Keisuke Honda at the death.

But they survived CSKA’s late rally and exerted enough control overall to suggest they could all but secure a last-16 spot with a repeat win at the Etihad Stadium in a fortnight.

It came as a surprise when CSKA grabbed the lead against the run of play after 32 minutes.

A long ball by keeper Igor Akinfeev was headed on and Tosic raced through to lob Hart.

The goal again highlighted City’s defensive vulnerabilities in the absence of captain Vincent Kompany but their response was immediate as they attacked down the left and Silva delivered a fine cross into the area. Aguero edged ahead of his marker and slid the ball home.

It was not long before City had a second, Aguero on target again to head a Negredo cross past Akinfeev from close range.

It was the Argentinian’s eighth goal in his last six games.

Honda had a golden chance to equalise in stoppage time after chesting down a cross but Hart got in the way to block.
