Irish winger O'Brien seals move to Hibs

HIERNIAN yesterday paved the way for the expected loss of Ivan Sproule to Bristol City by signing Republic of Ireland international winger Alan O'Brien from Newcastle United on a three-year deal.

A compensation package - expected to be up to 200,000 - will need to be thrashed out between the two clubs because of the 22-year-old's age but the initial 350,000 which could be coming the club's way from the likely departure of Sproule will help.

The German under-21 international Torben Joneleit is expected to follow O'Brien to Easter Road this week on a season-long loan deal from Monaco, Hibs manager John Collins' former club.
