Arbroath 1 - 2 Alloa: Revenge for Alloa

Alloa gained revenge for Saturday’s 1-0 defeat from Arbroath by scoring in the last minute at Gayfield to clinch a Second Division victory, with substitute Kevin Cawley claiming the winner despite the best attempts of new boy Calum Elliot to steal the goal from him.

Referee: D Somers. Att: 471.

The former Hearts striker made a quickfire debut after international clearance came through from Lithuania, and his new side took the lead on 19 minutes when Ryan McCord was felled in the box.

The midfielder dusted himself down before shooting the penalty past Scott Morrison and he could have doubled his side’s advantage before half-time when a saved Elliot shot rolled into his path, however his effort was charged down.

The Red Lichties saw a period of pressure rewarded on 64 minutes when skipper Stuart Malcolm rose to head home a cross from player/ manager Paul Sheerin. Elliot had the chance to put his side ahead again just three minutes after Malcolm’s leveller when Martin Grehan sent him clear on goal, however Morrison saved well. Then, with just 90 seconds left, Cawley turned home a pass from fellow replacement Eddie Ferns, with the goalscorer unimpressed with claims that Elliot had provided the final touch. He said: “It is my goal and no-one is taking it from me.”
