John Huggan: Beem brightens up Euro Tour

IN AN era where big, blond and bland are increasingly the dominant characteristics of so many leading players on his home circuit, Rich Beem is cheerfully none of the above.

Flagging up a scandal? The SPL must be given time to see if the allegations about wrongdoing at Ibrox are true. Picture: PA

Tom English: ‘A mammoth investigation, so vast that it is without parallel in the history of the Scottish game’

Time waits for no man, least of all the football authorities in Scotland and the business of the investigation into the alleged double contracts at Rangers, a process that began in March and which is now seeing the Scottish Premier League coming under heavy pressure to put on its black cap and start doling out some justice.

Iain Fletcher: West Indies’ up and down attitude will hand England Test on a plate

BEFORE the Test match started, West Indies were publicly stating that a draw or taking the game into the final day could be construed a success for them. It was rhetoric that smacked of pessimism, or realism, depending on one’s outlook, but nothing they have shown in three days has suggested they should have greater ambition. England will win this game, comfortably, and West Indies will try and glean some positives for their rebuilding process. What though?

Watchable? Na: The US golfers crisis of confidence led to him taking endless waggles before each shot at the Players Championship in Florida. Photograph: Andy Lyons/Getty

John Huggan: Take pity on go-slow Kevin Na

THE American slowed the glacial pace of US golf even further at Sawgrass but, unlike the PGA, he is at least trying to change

Colin Cameron: Emotions to the fore on very special day

THAT was actually quite emotional. I had a wee moment to myself as I soaked it all up because it’s different when you are sitting in the stands.

Tom English: ‘Do you, Mr Miller, have the foggiest clue what you’re letting yourself in for here?’

THE word of the week on the Rangers front was clarity. Ally McCoist was delighted that at last there was clarity on Rangers’ future, Duff & Phelps announced that now they had clarity on the preferred bidder they could move on to the next stage of this tortuous saga.

USPGA champion Bradley has the odd flaw, says John Huggan, but watch out for this rising star in majors and the 2012 Ryder Cup

John Huggan: Par for the coarse

The Players has its merits, but Sawgrass’s crude 17th-hole sideshow means it will never be the ‘fifth major’ that PGA chief Tim Finchem craves

John Huggan: ‘Fixing’ a hole ... or how the custodians of the game made a hash of changing courses to deal with technology

IT IS a sad but undeniable fact that history will not be kind to those charged with the administration of golf over the last two decades or so.

Aidan Smith: Half-time cup of tea, Ern?

The headline read: “Cup + Local Rivalry = Excitement.” That was Hearts programme editor Davie Laing’s welcome for what was my first capital clash for the infernal silver pail. He wasn’t wrong that day – 1971, fourth round – and he’s not been wrong since.

THE TV singing contest The Voice has been such a hit that it’s claimed ownership of those high-backed leather chairs used by Sir Tom Jones and the other judges.

Aidan Smith: Hail Messi and beware the anti-Barca brigade

IT’S A terrible moment in the life of a football-loving nostalgist when you realise the issue is not that things ain’t as good as they used to be but that they might not have been so epoch-making in the first place.
