Rory McIlroy shows signs of return to winning ways

Amid all the nonsense that went on before and during last week’s Players Championship – Vijay’s amazing decision to sue the PGA Tour, Sergio’s increasingly open dislike of the world’s best golfer and Tiger’s apparent need for both road map and rulebook when dropping balls – one thing went almost unnoticed. Behind everyone’s back, Rory McIlroy slipped quietly into a tie for eighth place.

Evidence seems to suggest that Charles Green and Craig Whyte were, in fact, working together. Picture: SNS

Tom English: Green-Whyte team would break all rules

IF YOU asked the hardcore Celtic support which they’d prefer, sex or social media, some might say: “What’s the difference?” Without a doubt there was a near orgasmic glee last week when a new Twitter account started posting links to private documents and previously unheard audio featuring a cast of characters in the Rangers story.

Aidan Smith: Tense, nervous? It must be the play-offs

I will go anywhere to avoid having to watch Chelsea nick another European trophy so that the non-playing John Terry can don full kit (plus shinpads!) for the celebrations. On Wednesday night Recreation Park was as good a place as any.

Tom English: Lions guessing game almost over

TOMORROW evening Warren Gatland will gather his selectors together for one last meeting before announcing the 2013 Lions the following morning, probably 37 players in number with Sam Warburton largely expected to captain the party in Australia.

Aidan Smith: Celtic players - Lennon’s behind you

ONE of my favourite football anecdotes was told to me by Colin Stein and it concerned the Rangers dressing-room, pre-match.

It's moments like this clutching the Premier League Trophy, that could keep Lennon at Parkhead for at least some time yet. Picture: Robert Perry

Tom English: Neil Lennon deserves the prize

Deadlines have passed and votes have been cast in the end-of-season awards merry-go-round with the humble scribblers soon to dish out their gongs after the players did so last weekend.

Rangers: Paul Murray calling for core values

IN THE cast of characters in the recent history of Rangers, the unreliables have come to outweigh the upright with near Apocalyptic consequences. Paul Murray can be counted in the second category, a guy you could hang your hat on to do what is right for the club or, to put it another way, an endangered species in this brutal saga.

John Huggan: Time for a change

OK, TIME out. Given all the nonsense in golf right now – Vijay Singh’s use of antler spray and subsequent propensity for litigation, slower and slower play, the rumbling aftermath of Tiger’s Masters drop and the banning or not of so-called “belly” and “anchored” putters – the time has come to ask the obvious question.

John Huggan: Merion offers thinking man’s US Open

JUST the other day, the United States Golf Association announced a record entry of 9,860 brave and talented souls for this year’s US Open. Which came as no surprise, as this will be, in so many ways, a special event.

Thrilling Masters overshadowed by Tiger Woods

Despite a closing two hours or so memorable for all that is great and good about golf, it is sadly not for the terrific shot-making and exemplary sportsmanship of the two main protagonists that the 77th Masters Tournament will be most vividly recalled.

Aidan Smith: Did I tell you about the time I never met Sir Alex?

I have never met Sir Alex Ferguson, so what you are about to read will probably rate as mere crumbs in the great feast of words dedicated to the man.

AN OLD Harry Hill gag saw him impersonating an irrepressible Italian waiter and I can’t get the catchphrase out of my head.
