Woman mugged by robber with knife in the Meadows

A YOUNG woman has been held up at knifepoint in the second robbery to take place in the Meadows in a week.

Police are appealing for witnesses after the 23-year-old woman was attacked while walking alone at Jawbone Walk around 1.50am on Friday.

It comes just days after a man was punched in the face and robbed on Middle Meadow Walk.

The latest victim, who had been walking home from work, was approached by a man who grabbed her arm and threatened her with a knife. She broke free and ran towards Melville Drive, dropping her handbag.

Detective Constable Kevin Tait said: “While the victim wasn’t injured, she was understandably shaken as a result of what happened, and we are appealing for any information that can assist us in tracing the suspect.

“The suspect has presented the knife to her, which was described as having a wooden handle and a ten-inch blade.

“She turned round, her bag has fallen off her shoulder and she has run away.

“The victim walked straight home and contacted the police.

“There are inquiries ongoing to establish where the suspect came from and whether he had been waiting there.

“It was student night at the bars and clubs and there may well have been students out and about at that time.”

The suspect is described as white, 6ft tall, in his 30s, slightly built, with short fair hair.

He was wearing a dark blue or black fleece, a beanie-style hat, a black or navy blue thigh-length waterproof jacket, dark trousers, and a dark top.

Additional uniformed and plain-clothes patrols will be deployed in the area to provide reassurance and act as a deterrent to criminal activity. DC Tait added: “Anyone who was in the area of the Meadows in the early hours of this morning, who was either approached by the suspect or who noticed anyone acting suspiciously, should contact police.”

On Monday, a 30-year-old was walking through Middle Meadow Walk at around 10.30pm when he was confronted by two men.

One man punched him in the face and continued the assault before taking his belongings and running off.

DC Tait said that the two crimes were not being treated as linked.
