9am Briefing: Firefighters tackle kitchen blaze

FIREFIGHTERS were called to a kitchen fire at a home in Liberton last night.

The blaze broke out in a pan of food at a house on Jean Armour Avenue at around 6.30pm.

An elderly woman managed to extinguish the flames before firefighters arrived.

The woman was given oxygen at the scene by firefighters until an ambulance arrived.

• CITY shopworker Rajan Sangwan is celebrating after his sister won a wrestling gold medal in the Commonwealth Games.

Geeta Kumari, 21, from Ballali in Haryana, took the under-48kgs title for India in impressive style yesterday, much to the delight of brother Rajan, who works in Viewforth.

The honorary secretary of Commonwealth Games Scotland, Douglas Brown, and his wife Noreen, who live in Edinburgh near the shop and are currently in Delhi, sent Geeta a special message of congratulations on behalf of Rajan.

Maths graduate David Vamplew joined friends for the Poker Society's weekly game.

The 23-year-old, who graduated from the Capital university last year, beat a field of 848 to take first prize in the final of the Pokerstars European Poker tour in London on Monday night.

He said he was going to buy a flat in Edinburgh with his winnings.
