Badminton: Joy for Julie at Scotstoun

Edinburgh’s Julie McPherson won the girls’ badminton doubles with Erskine’s Sarah Findlay and was runner-up in the singles at the Under-15 Home Countries Quadrangular at the National Academy at Scotstoun in Glasgow.

McPherson had helped Scotland win the team title on Friday, and singles wins for Scots Alex Dunn and Holly Newall ended a successful weekend for the home youngsters. In the singles finals, Motherwell’s Dunn beat Ireland’s Norman Tau 21-15 19-21 21-19, while Mauchline’s Newall upset McPherson, the Scottish under-17 and under-15 title-holder, 17-21 21-7 21-14.

Newall and McPherson will be competing for Scotland at next week’s Sainsbury’s UK School Games in London. In the doubles, McPherson teamed up with Erskine’s Sarah Findlay to beat England’s Joshmyn Bong and Clara Lindsay 21-18 10-21 21-17 in a close final.
