The film, an adaptation of the Scots writer Alexander Trocchi’s first novel, tells the story of Joe, an amoral wanderer played by McGregor, who discovers the body of a girl while working on a barge. It has raised eyebrows with its graphic sex scenes between McGregor and co-star Emily Mortimer since premiering at the 2003 Cannes Film Festival.

However, critics claimed the cinematography transformed the bleak backdrop of 1950s Scotland into "explosive beauty" and that it was "a film charged with unexploded tension throughout".

The only other film to receive a similar number of nominations is Master And Commander: The Far Side Of The World
