• Former US president has formed unlikely friendship with tycoon

The former President of the United States has confirmed he will jet in to Aberdeenshire for a round at the 750 million pound development near Balmedie next year.

Mr Clinton will be one of the most VIP bookings the championship links has entertained to date.

Mr Trump said: “I have just spoken to Bill Clinton and he has told me he is going to be flying to Scotland next summer to play the course.”

The pair have forged an unlikely friendship in recent years, despite holding different political views.

This summer Mr Clinton, who was Democratic president between 1993 and 2001, said Mr Trump had been “uncommonly nice” to him and his wife Hillary, and said he “loved” playing golf with him.

Since the course’s grand opening in July, the course has attracted thousands of bookings from all over the world and a star-studded guestlist.

The championship resort gave Scottish tourism a huge boost within the first four weeks of its opening.

More than 8,000 bookings from 20 different countries were taken from golfers keen to play the controversial links.

The Trump Organisation said they had had a “phenomenal” interest since opening and had received interest from golf enthusiasts from as far away as Australia, Argentina and Japan.

Mr Trump teed off the first round with former Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie and 1999 Open champion Paul Lawrie.

Dragons’ Den star Duncan Bannatyne played the course earlier this month and sent a message to Mr Trump describing it as “quality stuff”.
