Pupils step in to promote walking week

CHILDREN across Midlothian will take to the streets next week for Walk to School Week 2010.

The campaign, organised by Living Streets and Midlothian Council, encourages children, parents and teachers to leave their cars and walk to school.

The theme for this year's Walk to School Week is "Walk Your Way", which aims to encourage parents and children to get to know their local neighbourhood better by exploring it on foot.

Midlothian Council is supporting Walk to School Week by offering schools wall charts, stickers and posters to promote the event. Many schools will be holding special assemblies to highlight the benefits of walking.

Russell Imrie, council cabinet member for strategic services, is urging parents and children to get involved with the week's events.

Councillor Imrie said: "Walk to School Week is a fantastic way for children to get out and about. Children can also improve their road safety skills and learn about local landmarks – all while keeping active and having fun."
