Wright ‘perfect fit’ for Saints

LIAM Craig yesterday insisted St Johnstone don’t have to look beyond McDiarmid Park to replace Millwall-bound Steve Lomas.

The former Perth fans’ favourite left for Hibs after helping Saints to third place in the SPL. And he believes assistant manager Tommy Wright, who has already been lined-up for an official interview by chairman Steve Brown, would be a “perfect fit.”

The midfielder watched Wright and Lomas at close quarters for two successful seasons and has no doubt the former Northern Ireland keeper, who has turned down the opportunity to follow Lomas to the Den, would be a popular appointment among the players.

He said: “If Tommy wants to stay in Perth he would be the ideal appointment in my book, a stick on to take the club forward.

“He knows the players better than anyone and the Europa League qualifiers aren’t far away. Tommy would hit the ground running and it would be a seamless transition.

“Tommy commands huge respect in that dressing room. Remember, he had experience of management in Northern Ireland and that will have helped Steve Lomas make a success of his first real job as a manager.

“If Tommy fancies the idea of being his own man again this is the perfect match.”
