Accent may cost Cheryl Cole top job on X Factor

Cheryl Cole's dreams of American super-stardom appear to have been dealt a blow, with reports that she has missed out on the top job on the US version of The X Factor.

Instead of a judging role, it is expected she will be offered the position of Simon Cowell's sidekick. It is understood that executives at Fox TV have been wary of offering her a place on the talent show, despite her overwhelming success on the UK version, because of her strong Newcastle accent.

The role of assistant to Mr Cowell would be similar to the part played by singer Sinitta on the UK version of the show.

As Cole's dreams of landing the top role on the American show appear to be disappearing, TV bosses in the UK have already been looking for her replacement, with supermodel Naomi Campbell rumoured to be lined up.
