The real Neapolitan pizza in Edinburgh

You could be forgiven for thinking you’ve stepped into a Naples side street when you first see Pizzeria 1926.

From the Diego Maradona mural outside to the Naples football scarves and memorabilia inside, you get the feeling that Pizzeria 1926 is as obsessed with its legendary football player as it is with food – and you’d be right.

Established in Edinburgh in 2016 this laid-back city-centre eatery sits just five minutes’ walk from Haymarket Station.

Its combination of freshly-cooked Napoli pizzas and ‘Friggitoria’ foods – fried snacks such as rice balls or croquettes which originate from Sicily – have proved a winner. Although the restaurant passed into new ownership a year ago, there are no plans to change the winning menu and even the décor and the staff remain the same and are ready with a warm welcome for customers old and new.

Expect simple tables, whitewashed walls, and rush-bottom chairs which give the place a timeless simplicity. And it’s the same for the food – this is Italian food at its best, simple quality ingredients cooked with love and attention to produce mouthwatering flavours and thoroughly satisfying meals.

Napoli style

Neopolitan pizza – known as Naples style or Napoli to give it its proper name – has the perfect combination of a thin base but a puffed-up outer crust which has the ideal amount of crunch and chewiness. There is no wonder this is the only Pizzeria in Scotland to be a member of the Associazione Verace pizza Napoletana – in other words, its pizzas are authenticated as true Napoli pizzas!

They’re all prepared and cooked fresh, in traditional ovens to ensure each one is as individual as you are – and tastes just like it would in Italy.

There are so many combinations of toppings you’ll be spoiled for choice and with a wide variety of salads and breads for starters and delicious dolce for dessert everyone will go home happy.

And with pizzas from just £9.95 you can afford to eat well anytime here at Pizzeria 1926.
