Theatre review: Hinge Presents: Dorian Hill Street Theatre (VENUE 41)
Will Self’s 2002 adaptation/imitation of Oscar Wilde’s classic pointlessly added pop music, video, Aids and the early 1980s gay scene to the decadent tale of a portrait in the attic.
RATING: * *
It probably wasn’t worth adapting for the stage, but this student production cranks up the camp with exaggerated performances, particularly a Lord Henry who is closer to a Lady Bracknell.
Self’s tricky ending doesn’t work when taken out of the context of his scabrous prose. There are some fun dance routines, though.
Until 27 August.
