Nicola Sturgeon: 38 new Covid-19 deaths and 951 new cases

Scotland has recorded 38 deaths from coronavirus and 951 positive cases in the past 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

The death toll under this measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – is now 3,797.

Speaking at the Scottish Government’s coronavirus briefing, the First Minister said the daily test positivity rate is 4.5%, down from 7.3% on Tuesday.

A total of 96,762 people have tested positive in Scotland, up from 95,811 the previous day.

There are 991 people in hospital confirmed to have the virus, a fall of 30 in 24 hours.

Of these patients, 68 are in intensive care, down by two.

Figures released today from the National Records of Scotland (NRS) show that, as of November 29, a total of 5,634 deaths have been registered in Scotland where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate.

NRS statistics also show that, between November 23 and November 29, there were 252 deaths where Covid-19 was mentioned on the death certificate,

Ms Sturgeon also announced that elderly people in care homes and their carers are top of the list to receive a Covid-19 vaccine after the UK became the first country in the world to approve a jab from Pfizer and BioNTech.

The jab has been shown in studies to be 95% effective and works in all age groups.
