Rugby: Musselburgh fountain of youth out to douse 'Muir

Musselburgh's thriving youth rugby set-up go in search of further glory tonight when they tackle Boroughmuir at Meggetland in the final of the Edinburgh Under-18 Cup.

Captained by back rower Michael Louden and coached by Graham Owenson and Kenny Thompson, 'Burgh will look to emulate the club's Under-15s who recently won their competition, coincidentally beating Boroughmuir in the final.

Giving 'Burgh confidence is the fact they are based around a team of two years ago which captured the national Under-16 cup while the current 30-strong squad comprises three players who represented Scotland Under-17 last season - Ryan Hook, Ryan Gray and Cammy Warnock.

Ruairidh Young will be absent, howwever, as he is representing the current Scotland Under-17s at the Wellington International Festival in Berkshire.

This year Edinburgh Under-18s have called upon Daniel Owenson, Thomas Hutchison and Aaron Welsh in addition to Young and Warnock with Hook and Gray injured while Andrew MacMillan, Owen Garvey and Michael Byrne have gained district Under-17 honours with Rory Watt in the Under-16s.

A major incentive for 'Burgh, who beat Biggar 42-10 in the Edinburgh semis, will be to maintain momentum going into next Tuesday's national Under-18 semi-final with Selkirk at Stoneyhill for the right to face Stirling County on May 7 at Murrayfield.

Meanwhile, Musselburgh's Under-15s have been promised a tour, possibly to Limerick, as reward for beating Boroughmuir 19-10 to claim the Edinburgh title in that age group.
