Own goal for Caldwell as Notts County stun Wigan

SCOTLAND defender Gary Caldwell scored an own goal as Wigan Athletic were the victims of a major FA Cup upset last night, losing 2-0 to League Two side Notts County at DW Stadium.

Having survived a series of Wigan attacks, County took a shock lead with 15 minutes to go as Stephen Hunt headed home Ben Davies' corner.

Caldwell then scored an own goal three minutes later to leave the Barclays Premier League side stunned and the Magpies looking forward to a trip to Fulham a week on Sunday.

It was an inspirational and well-deserved replay victory for cash-strapped County, the lowest-ranked team left in the competition.

On what was a wretched night in the competition for Premier League teams and Scotland defenders, Christophe Berra's Wolves were also on the receiving end of a humbling from lower-league opposition.

The Molineux outfit crashed to a 3-1 defeat at crisis-hit Championship outfit Crystal Palace, with Danny Butterfield scoring a second-half hat-trick in the space of six minutes.

The defender-turned-striker had scored just one goal in six seasons before his 'perfect' hat-trick, with his first goal coming in the 62nd minute.

"I still can't believe it's happened," said the hat-trick hero, whose side now face a lucrative trip to Aston Villa in the next round. "I'm normally a one goal every four seasons man so three in one night is unbelievable.

"I think I was a day too late, I could have perhaps gone for four or five million yesterday."

Palace captain Shaun Derry was similarly delighted.

"There's some spirit in this team, the boys are unbelievable," he said.

Karl Henry hit a 90th-minute consolation for Wolves.
