Kelburne run riot in 12-goal feast but Grange are neck and neck

Champions Glynhill Kelburne sent out an ominous message with a 12-2 demolition of Greaves Clydesdale in the Subway national league, but Grange are now level on points with back-to-back wins over Western Wildcats and Edinburgh University over the weekend.

Grange’s 4-0 defeat of Western Wildcats moved the Edinburgh side into second place in the table. Phil Sully opened the scoring with a deflection following a hard cross by Cammie Fraser and just on the interval captain Rob Barr doubled the score at a penalty corner when he popped the ball over the stick of runner-out Ian Moodie and fired a half volley past the Wildcats goalkeeper. In the second half Matt Connor made it three with a tap-in after Guy Murdoch had opened up the Wildcats defence. Then Murdoch himself completed the scoring for Grange, he picked up the ball in the Western half and raced into the scoring circle to fire home.

Yesterday Grange made slightly heavy weather of beating Edinburgh University 2-1 after two goals from Sully. Hat-tricks by Michael and Jonny Christie was the basis of Kelburne’s slaughter of luckless Clydesdale, whose goalkeeper Stuart Brown had to leave the field with concussion, leaving the Titwood outfit to finish the game with 11 outfield players and no keeper.

CALA Edinburgh continue to pick up valuable points with a 3-3 draw with Grove Menzieshill at Meggetland. With Menzieshill at full strength after 13 minutes Craig Falconer equalised, also from a set piece. The second half also finished even, Ramsay Bell and Karl Clarke scored for CALA while Olly James from the spot and Falconer again replied for the Dundonians.

Milne Craig Western youngsters finally came of age with a 3-2 win over title hopefuls VWS Dundee Wanderers in the women’s game of the day. After ten minutes the Taysiders failed to clear their lines, the ball fell to Morag McLellan who placed the ball wide of the keeper. Western were two up in 23 minutes, a cross from Holly Cram found Nicola Pitticas in space and she calmly pushed the ball home. The contest looked well and truly over when Wanderers’ defence gifted the ball to McLellan, unselfishly she crossed it to Vicki Scrastin who had the simple task of slapping the ball home. To their credit the Dundonians fought back with late strikes by Mandy Crawford and Heather Elder but Western held out for the three points.

A hat-trick of set pieces by Louise Carroll was the foundation of leaders Grove Menzieshill’s 5-0 win over GHK. Susie Blake’s single strike was sufficient to give Giffnock a 1-0 win over Grange. CALA Edinburgh moved off the bottom of the table with a 2-0 win over Western Wildcats, Kelburne went back on the winning trail with a single-goal victory over Edinburgh University.

The students recovered sufficiently to beat Grange 5-2 yesterday, player/coach Sam Judge scored a hat-trick with Mairi Drummond and Sarah Robertson getting the others.
