Innes backs Fort’s chance in ‘wide open’ title race

SHINTY: Gary Innes hopes Camanachd Cup winners Fort William can outdo Newtonmore in shinty’s game of the day today since the 2010 title is “wide open”.

Fort have won both their opening fixtures but now face a crucial double header against Newtonmore and Kingussie, last year’s runners up and champions respectively.

The An Aird side have aspirations of another title after they ended Kings’ 20-year stranglehold back in 2006. And Scotland international Innes believes they have as good a chance as anyone because the title could go in any of three or four different directions.

“The next two matches are important and we will see where we all stand after that,” said Innes. “These games will definitely be an indicator. In my opinion, everyone will drop points this year, so it is wide open. We have started well and we are glad to have got two wins under our belts before these matches. Hopefully we can get the result.”

Norman MacArthur’s Newtonmore will be confident after a convincing 5-1 win at Oban last weekend.
